Useful tips that you can try even before consulting a physician
An overactive bladder is a urological condition that makes a person have the sudden urge to pee. It is also known as OAB or Overactive Bladder Syndrome and is mainly concerned with the bladder storage function. A person suffering from the condition may have sudden bouts of rushing to the loo and controlling the act of urinating can sometimes be difficult. If you have to go more than three times in a 24-hour period, you might have OAB. Patients who suffer from the condition often tend to withdraw from society and become isolated and depressed. However, there are several ways that it can be treated today. Many people shy away from treating the condition because they are embarrassed but in the long run, it may prove to be a problem if something is not done.
While drinking 8-10 glasses of water is recommended by most specialists, that much liquid can make you want to make frequent trips to the restroom. Consuming too much liquid can also aggravate your overactive bladder. One way to control OAB is by limiting the liquid intake to 6-7 glasses per day or until the condition passes because that much is enough for the system. However, you will have to keep a check on the color of your urine because it can be a sure indicator of whether your body is receiving enough liquid.
The level of activity that you undergo through the day is also an indicator of how much fluid you need. The more exercise you get, the more your body will sweat and so in turn you will have to replenish it with more water. If you feel thirsty, dont hesitate to reach out for a glass of water.
Kegels help to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles which play a key role in controlling the urine flow. The pelvic floor muscles can lose strength and become involuntary to the brain’s commands when a woman experiences painful childbirth. Sometimes, it can happen due to an accident. The best thing about Kegels is that anyone can perform it at any time while lying down, sitting or standing, and no one will know you are doing the exercise. You only need to locate the muscles that are contracted during the act of peeing and concentrate on those muscles. You can locate these muscles by stopping urine mid-stream and understanding which muscle to work. However, do not stop urine mid-stream often because it can be bad for your bladder.
Once you locate the muscles, whilst on an empty stomach, concentrate on those muscles and squeeze hard and maintain the squeeze for 3 seconds. Your stomach and thigh muscles should not be effected by this squeeze. Release after 3 seconds, break for 3 more and then continue the exercise for 10 sets. Do this 3 times every day. As your pelvic floor muscles get stronger, increase the squeeze time by 1 second every week until you reach 10 seconds. If you find no improvement after 3 months of doing this exercise, consulting a doctor is advisable. Also, be cautious not to perform Kegels while actually urinating because it can damage your bladder.
If you are unsure how to proceed with treating your overactive bladder or are unsure if you do have OAB, you can keep a bladder diary to help out. A bladder diary is like a regular journal but you document information regarding how much you urinate, the frequency of loo breaks, the number of liquids you intake, activities performed through the day, the number of times you had a leak so powerful you couldn’t control it etc. Keeping a track of what you were doing when you had a leak is also essential, like for example, if you have a leak when you sneeze or exercise. Keeping this journal will help document your condition to understand it better and will in turn point you in the direction of what could be the core problem.
If you are under medication for OAB, continue to maintain the diary because it can give you insight into whether the medication is working effectively. Also, document your Kegel and other pelvic muscle strengthening exercises as well. If you don’t want to put pen to paper, you can always opt for an e-diary option that can be accessed through your phone or laptop.
