Can homeopathy and other offbeat solutions help your enlarged prostate?
An enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a condition that usually affects older men. It might pose as a threat to a man’s lifestyle because its symptoms can be uncomfortable to deal with. The prostate gland is a walnut sized gland that contributes to a man’s sexual life and as he ages, it can become a hotspot for cancer. The gland essentially holds the semen that is ejaculated during orgasm. When the gland doesn’t function properly, the chances of pregnancy are close to null.
The gland first develops during a boy’s puberty at the size of an almond and it grows throughout puberty until it reaches the size of an English walnut. After puberty, the gland remains the size it has grown to for most part. But, many men between the ages of 40-60 experience the further growth of the gland which is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate. By the age of 80, almost most men show some symptoms of BPH. The gland contains all the essential nourishment sperms require to fight against the harsh conditions of the female reproductive organs and get through to the ovaries, where they hook onto the egg to form a fetus. An enlarged prostate expands and the tissue around it presses against the bladder and causes urine discharge at frequent intervals. In some cases, the enlarged prostate can obstruct the passage through which urine is passed leading to one of the major symptoms of this condition which is difficulty in passing urine. Apart from difficulty in peeing, an enlarged prostate can make the urine flow back into the bladder where it can stagnate and become an infection if bacteria thrives on it. Eventually, the bladder’s ability to pass urine deteriorates and urine continues to remain in the bladder for a long time.
The BPH condition is considered as the equivalent of the female menopause. In menopause, the level of testosterone increases as the level of estrogen produced in the body drops. When a man has an enlarged prostate, the level of testosterone produced drops and estrogen levels remain high in the body. The drastic imbalance of hormones can lead to several problems, the main one being impotence.
Homeopathy is a form of medicine that is configured on the idea that the body has the ability to heal itself. It was created by Samuel Hahnemann and originated in Europe. Hahnemann found the doctrine on the concept that what causes a disease in a healthy person is what can cure the disease in a sick person and the practice has no side effects on the patient. Homeopathy is often confused with herbal medicine because it sounds similar to the later. While homeopathy does use extreme dilutions of mostly plant and sometimes metal extracts, it is not entirely an herbal practice. The patient’s personal traits including psychological state of mind, history of disease and symptoms are all taken into account before prescribing the accurate medicine.
The Saw Palmetto plant extracts is commonly used in homeopathic medicine to treat an enlarged prostate. It is commonly found in the US and had been used medicinally for thousands of years to relieve the symptoms of an enlarged prostate and is also popular for treating women with premenstrual syndrome. The plant extract is also anabolic meaning it helps repair and strengthen body tissue. Palmetto also nourishes both the sexes to bring about good hormonal balance and also promotes the growth of hair tissue.
Another plant that is used in homeopathy for treating an enlarged prostate is Thuja occidentalis, Petroselinum also commonly known as Parsley, solidago virga (golden rod) and prunus spinosa (black thorn). Extracts of metals commonly used for enlarged prostate treatment are ferrum picricum (picrate of iron). An element called cantharidine taken from cantharis, commonly known as the Spanish fly, is also considered one of the best medicines for treating BPH. However, if taken in large doses it can cause vomiting and burning of the urinary tract.
Do not directly ingest any of these medications but go to a homeopathy specialist who can analyze your condition properly and then prescribe the appropriate medication that will work best for you. The doctor will need to know detailed information regarding the frequency of your regular bathrooms visits, your nightly pee breaks, intermittency and urgency of the visits along with any straining you might experience while passing urine. Be prepared to answer everything honestly and you will be on the path of recovery in no time so long as the prescribed medication is followed religiously.
