Read on for unconventional but effective remedies to rid heartburn.
Everyone has experienced heartburn at some point in their lives and the condition gets more severe as a person ages. It refers to the burning sensation that occurs behind the breastplate and many times it can spread all the way to the throat. It isn’t considered to be a disease but can be a symptom for a disease that is on its way. Heartburn usually occurs because of acid reflux which is when stomach acid climbs upwards towards the throat pipe through the lower esophageal sphincter. This literally means that acid climbs up your food pipe causing a burn that can be very uncomfortable. If you experience heartburn infrequently, try some of these offbeat solutions instead of popping unnecessary medication that might harm your immune system. Over-the-counter antacids can restrict the body’s ability to absorb the nutrients that prevent acid build-up in the stomach. However, if you suffer from chronic heartburn it might be your body trying to indicate that something is amiss, so go consult a doctor to find out what is wrong.
Aloe vera has been used to treat burns since centuries. It is also present in several creams, shampoos and soaps because of its vast medicinal properties and is a common solution to treating sunburns as well. Aloe vera juice is great for soothing heartburn caused by acid reflux. Drink 2 ounces of the juice every time you experience heartburn or have it 20 minutes before a meal and you will see that your heartburn will disappear. You can find it in supermarkets but know that too much of it can act as a laxative so if you want to avoid frequent trips to the loo, get a version that has the laxative element removed from it. If you have an aloe vera plant at home you can also pluck off a plant leaf and blend it in a blender with a cup of water and drink it to reap its benefits.
Heartburn is often caused when one lies down immediately after eating. Avoid being horizontal immediately after eating your grub. Most people complain of heartburn in the night and this is because they go to bed within a few minutes of finishing their dinners. Go to sleep only after 3 hours or more of eating dinner. Gravity works against you and aids the acid in the stomach to flow back into the esophagus when you lie down. If you have to lie down, elevate your body from the waist up using a firm pillow that will keep you sturdy. Wear comfortable clothing while hitting the bed so that the contents in the stomach are not pressed against each other.
Chew on a banana and you’ll see your heartburn vanish within 30 minutes. A survey conducted at Australia’s University of New England found that individuals who frequently experience heartburn gained significant relief within 2 weeks of adding bananas to their everyday diet. Bananas contain natural antacids that soothe the stomach and stop excess production of acid, thus reducing the amount of acid spilling over through the lower esophageal sphincter. Sweet apples also have a similar effect because of their alkaline nature.
