There had been a long withstanding myth that a high fiber intake could lower the chance of one developing colon cancer. Eventually it was established that a high fiber diet has very little link with colon cancer. This happened by observing people to see the changes cancer goes through after a period of time. This method of research is said to be much more accurate when studying how diseases work, as it seems to be when seeing negligible signs of any link between not eating fibre and cancer. .
Randomized trials cemented this theory. Two groups of people were selected and one was given a high fiber diet and the other a lower amount. After a period of 3 to 4 years it was found that there was no difference between the rates of colon polyps in the two groups. Colon polyps are noncancerous growths that can develop into cancer. This age-old link between fiber and colon cancer was resolutely disproven.
After compiling data on more than half a million people, it has been established that drinking at least a cup of milk a day lowers the risk of colon cancer. In fact, drinking a cup of milk reduces the risk of colon cancer by 15 percent. Drinking two glasses more reduces this risk by another 12 percent! Opt for low fat or skim milk because saturated fat has been linked to tumor growth.
