Depending on the stage of the HIV infection, there are a number of common HIV symptoms that are seen in men. Look out for these tell-tale signs.
Did you know that?
In order to understand the HIV symptoms commonly seen in men across the world, it is important to know exactly what HIV and AIDS are.
What is HIV?
HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is a specific virus that affects a person’s immune system. This virus causes damage to the immune system, and eventually stops it from fighting off other infections and diseases. Not only does this virus affect the cells of the immune system, it is also completely resistant to any attempts made by the immune system to effectively combat this virus.
What is AIDS?
Patients who have progressed to the advanced stages of an HIV infection are said to have AIDS. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is the stage of an HIV infection during which the immune system is so compromised that it is no longer able to protect the body from cancers and other infections. However, the time period between getting infected with the HIV virus and developing full-blown AIDS can range from a couple of months to more than 10 years.
Is there a cure for HIV/AIDS?
Currently, there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. However, there are a number of drug therapies that can be used to impede the virus from replicating, reduce the severity of HIV symptoms, and prevent other illnesses.
Why is it important to recognize early HIV symptoms?
As with many other terminal diseases, an early diagnosis is crucial for better life expectancy of people who have HIV/AIDS. Basically, the sooner your HIV symptoms get diagnosed and treatment starts, the better are your chances of fighting the HIV virus within your body. According to a study published in PLOS Medicine, if treatment of HIV symptoms starts before the complete compromise of the immune system, the chances of HIV-positive people to have near-normal life expectancy is high. Furthermore, a 2011 study by the NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) also states that early treatment of HIV symptoms leads to a much lowered chance of passing on the infection to partners.
