The common cold is caused by a mild viral infection of the nose, sinuses, throat, and upper airways tract. In fact, there are more than 200 viruses that can cause common cold symptoms. The most prevalent of these is the rhinovirus, which is thought to be responsible for between 10 to 40 percent of colds.
Whilst not classed as a serious illness, colds can leave you feeling rather blue. From sneezing and coughing to a sore throat and chill-ridden fatigue, symptoms appear when your immune system starts battling the virus. Since so many different viruses can cause colds, there is no vaccine against this aptly names illness: common by name, common by nature! As such, people often take to homemade ‘cures’ to ease their symptoms – but, from a scientific viewpoint, these are often utterly useless.
