Learn acupuncture from your own home when you learn how to get an acupuncture certification online.
You can learn acupuncture at home and get your certification easier than you think.
Acupuncture is something that you need hands-on experience to learn to do fully. However, if going to school full-time is not a good option for you, there are hybrid programs available. What this means is that while you may not be able to complete the entire education from home, you can do the coursework online while learning the hands-on part at a school. This does allow you more freedom if you’re looking into how to get an acupuncture certification online.
First of all, you will need to find out if the acupuncture school online that you are interested in offers a hybrid course. If so, you should be aware that many will require you to attend rigorous classes on campus for the first two years of study, and these are typically every quarter of the year. This is normally for those who are just starting out in the field. For those who already have licenses in other health fields, such as a chiropractor, the on-campus time is less – typically two days a week for approximately half of the course load. These are on-site clinical classes that teach you the safety you need for things like handling certain equipment, laser acupuncture, needling, and electroacupuncture. No matter which online course you find, you will have to attend some classes in person. This type of acupuncture certification program is done this way so that people have experience in the field and not just by reading a textbook. So keep this in mind when you get an acupuncture certification online.
In an acupuncture certification program for those doing continuing education or those who have already gotten their practitioner license, the ongoing education course load covers a variety of topics. Some of the acupuncture courses that are a must include things like acupuncture for ear infections, origins of disease in TCM, herb and drug interactions and safety precautions, treating imbalances of the liver, diagnosis in acupuncture, prescribing Chinese herbal medicine, bio-mechanical responses to needling, and theories of diagnosis with the eight principle patterns of disharmony. These acupuncture courses make sure that the student continues to know more about acupuncture and has a deeper understanding of this practice. There are even PhD opportunities in acupuncture certification programs that are available.
Each school is different, and each type of course load varies depending on your own circumstances as well as what the school requires. For example, for those who are continuing their education, these courses are mostly online and can be completed at the student’s own pace. Those who are first getting their license without having any further licenses, on the other hand, will have to attend the on-site courses as mentioned above. The same thing goes for those students who have other licenses to practice but are just now getting an acupuncture license specifically. The only difference between the two is that the on-campus requirements are much less rigorous than those for the first-time students who have no prior training in any health field sector. Schools that do offer a hybrid situation for those distant learners often try to accommodate the student’s needs by offering multiple locations for students to do their on-site training. Not all schools do this, however, so make sure you find out before you assume you’ll have more options when it comes to where you have to do this hands-on work. Always check with the school to find out their specific acupuncture certification programs.
An established acupuncturist can make a good income with this type of health care. In fact, the median salary as of 2014 is around $74K according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. These statistics also show that the job growth in this field is at around 8 percent, which is a good thing because more jobs means that you have more choices in your chosen field. You must have a high school diploma as a prerequisite, and the training that is required is certified by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA). Your certification depends on which state you reside in; some states require a background check as well as certification, so you will need to check your own state to find out.
There are actually PhD opportunities in acupuncture. These are not the norm, but they do exist. However, most of them are a combination of some other type of study such as Eastern medicine, aromatherapy, massage, or Ayurveda. For these students, you are looking at around three to four years of study and writing an original thesis, which requires research done on your own. This is an excellent starting point for those who are looking to open their own business or even work at a hospital, medical practice, or clinic as a medical acupuncturist. This involves quite a bit more time, course work, and previous college degrees, but many people feel it is worth the effort. And it could all start when you get an acupuncture certification online.
